Edge Environment
Edge Environment is a research, consultancy and education business with a focus on the construction and materials industries. The hallmark of Edge Environment services is a practical application of the best available science delivered with integrity.
Edge clients are pioneers in their markets who have the vision to see sustainability as a viable path to long-term economic prosperity. They come to Edge for genuine and progressive improvement in their products and services.
The Role
This intern position is to assist Nigel Howard in the development of a prototype Life Cycle Environmental Assessment (LCA) design tool called ENVEST. ENVEST is unique in working from design inception, reconciling materials embodied, operational energy, water cleaning and maintenance implications as a design evolves. It works by extracting every last drop of design intelligence from the 4 key pieces of information provided in a design brief – Site location, Building size, Mix of Use and Budget. ENVEST permits any of 12 life cycle impact categories to be used, including Global Warming Potential (GWP – Carbon) and Water footprint or a composite weighted indicator expressed in Ecopoints. ENVEST calculates initial and life cycle $ cost in parallel with its environmental assessment and reveals the tradeoffs in performance relevant to every design decision. ENVEST tracks the design process from inception, permitting greater and greater detail to be addressed as the design evolves. At any point, the ENVEST design can be exported to BIM for compatibility with other buildings simulation and CAD software.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a tool which is set to revolutionise building design for least environmental impact and least cost.
The intern will undertake 3 main projects; the first to develop the data and algorithms for $-cost and replacement life to embed within ENVEST, the second to validate/calibrate the ENVEST energy modeling data against NABERS and other buildings’ energy performance data; the third to develop the BIM filter from the ENVEST file. The intern may also be asked to assist with other development tasks.
Salary
ENVEST is an unfunded project for Edge Environment at present, so we are not able to offer a full salary for this work. Edge Environment will cover expenses attending our offices in Manly NSW for the required periods. Edge Environment is content for internes to work away from the office also as long as they attend one day per week to update on progress.
