Flood Resilient Housing in Ballina

Flood Resilient Housing in Ballina

Edge Environment is working with Ballina Shire council to develop alternate development pathways for flood resilient homes in Ballina Shire. We are researching and investigating alternative methods to current fill policy to enable council, community and the development industry to create a resilient built environment to enable Ballina Shire to grow and become a regional centre. We are drawing on knowledge and experience from a set of similar projects delivered over the course of 7 years and can now see a clear trajectory of progress towards resilient built environments for Local Governments in Australia.

From work done for the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (NCCARF) in 2010 with Sunshine Coast Council through to most recent work with Lake Macquarie Council and the Insurance Council of Australia we observe that councils and industry alike are implementing changes to policy and creating guidelines and economic incentives for the building supply chain to deliver more resilient homes. Regulation and Policy addressing resilience is evolving relatively quickly and we predict that this emerging policy framework will have the desired effect of stimulating the whole building supply chain to deliver more resilient houses, and an Australia that is more resilient to the increasing frequency and intensity of Natural Hazards.
